Week 1!

Week 1 on base complete! We arrived on Saturday at the base at Baie Cap Ternay and have been going non stop since! It is located in an old youth camp, so there are lots of buildings around.

The place is a bit rustic and our roof leaks a bit when it rains...
Okay that's a joke, it is not THAT rustic. This is merely storage/workshop space on the first floor.

Dorms on top, classroom on bottom

The week was filled with lots of training, learning, lectures, duties, work, diving and sleep. We have a 45 minute dive once a day and spend the rest of the time doing various duties and studying our corals. Here's an average day:

6am - wake up in this comfy bed in a dorm I share with 6 other people.

6:30am - Breakfast in the kitchen

7:30am - 12pm - lecture in the classroom, duty groups (filling air tanks, cooking, cleaning, workin on the boat, etc)

3pm - 9pm More lectures, duties and work before dinner at 6:30pm then bed by 9 or so!

Our weekends are Friday & Saturday so today is our first day off.  I've been running a few days on the super hilly road from base to the bus stop which has spectacular views, which are below. This week I dove 4 times and mainly worked on skills like bouncy and navigation. Next week will be some in water coral tests. There are 26 volunteers total from all over the world, most are staying for 4 weeks but there are a small handful here for 12 and only one other person doing the full 6 months dive master internship. So far, so good; this place pretty damn spectacular and I am loving all the experiences so far! Will only be posting about once a week for a while until we finish training and have more spare time.

  3. so very awesome! now for a few questions:
    What is the food like?
Is the place buggy?no see'ums or mozzies?
Are you taking anti-malaria meds or just protecting
    yo self with repellent?
How many corals are you being tested on?
Are y'all diving off a coral reef and how far by boat
do you go out to dive? How deep is it where you are
diving? So no booze or coffee. Just water from a well or rain collection?
The other person who is staying for 6 months, male or female? and from where?
List the countries everyone is from...
    :)
